Car and Driver does an excellent job of using Sound Answers’ data and reviewing reasons why the same cylinder engines can sound so different between different cars. One example they discussed was the 180 degree crank in a V8 Ferrari has a smooth sound, whereas the V8 Corvette with a 90 degree crank creates more of a “lumpy burble” sound. Same cylinder engines sounding so different from a variety of design factors including the exhaust system and body shell.
